map & directions

North Florida Regional Medical Center opened its new emergency department in April 1999. With more than 15,000 square feet of space and a comfortable atmosphere, it is designed for faster, more patient friendly medical care. The physicians and nurses working in our emergency department have specialized training in emergency medicine.

The facility contains 23 patient beds. These specialized rooms include:

  • critical care
  • cardiac care (16 rooms with cardiac monitoring)
  • ear, nose & throat cases
  • pediatrics
  • psychiatric care
  • gynecological care
  • orthopedics
  • respiratory isolation rooms

Patients

When you arrive at the emergency department, triage personnel will evaluate your problem and determine the first step in your care. Please be prepared to give the following information:

  • Reason for your visit
  • When you had your last tetanus shot
  • Names and doses of medications you are taking
  • If you are allergic to any medications
  • If you think you may be pregnant
  • Previous medical history

Sometimes, there are unavoidable delays and a patient can't be seen immediately. You may notice that a number of patients who arrived after you are taken care of before you. There are a number of reasons why this could happen:

  • Critically ill patients always are cared for first.
  • Some patients have arranged to meet their private physician and don't need to wait for the emergency center physician.
  • Sometimes, it is necessary for a certain treatment room to be available - for example a surgical room where equipment is close at hand.

After you have seen the emergency department physician, you may need to wait a while longer for:

  • Blood work and other laboratory results to come back
  • X-rays to be processed and read
  • Observation after you have received medications and/or treatments
  • A private physician to see if you are going to be admitted to the hospital
  • A hospital room to be prepared if you are entering the hospital

Billing

In order to better understand our billing process, please be aware that you should expect bills from the hospital, the emergency room physician and possibly the following:

  • radiologist
  • pathologist
  • consulting physician(s)

Visitors

By understanding the conditions of the emergency department, you will help doctors and nurses provide the best possible care for your loved one. We ask our visitors to observe the following guidelines:

  • Please limit visitors to one at a time unless advised by the staff. That gives your loved one a chance to rest and get needed medical care as efficiently as possible.
  • If asked, please leave the patient when examinations or treatments are being performed.
  • Please leave children with a friend or relative in the lobby. If possible, have children looked after at home.

If you have any questions, problems or suggestions for improvements please don't hesitate to call the department manager. Feel free to ask questions. We are here to help you and your loved one.
